FIT & MEASUREMENTS
Vial Size Guide: Measure Diameter & Height
The volume printed on a vial tells you its capacity. A storage case needs to fit the outside of the vial, including its cap and label. Two vials marked 3 mL can have different outer measurements.
Measure three things
- Body diameter: measure straight across the widest part of the vial body. Keep the label in place if it will remain on the vial.
- Cap diameter: measure across the widest part of the cap. A wider cap can affect spacing between neighboring vials.
- Total height: measure from the bottom of the vial to the top of its closed cap. The lid needs clearance above it.
Use millimeters so the measurements can be compared directly. Calipers are useful for diameter; if you only have a ruler, send a clear photograph with the vial beside it and identify the reading as an estimate. Keep containers closed while measuring.
Are vial sizes standard?
A 3 mL or 10 mL capacity label does not identify one guaranteed outside size. Body shape, cap size and overall height can differ between containers. Measure the actual closed vial and compare it with the case opening and lid clearance before ordering.
Record your vial measurements
| Measurement | What to record |
|---|---|
| Body diameter | Widest body width in mm, with its label in place |
| Cap diameter | Widest closed-cap width in mm |
| Total height | Bottom to the top of the closed cap in mm |
| Quantity | Number of vials with these measurements |
Describe the whole layout
Count the vials you want the case to hold. If you use more than one size, list the number and measurements for each group. Measure any separate bottles or packaged supplies too, including the packaging you plan to keep on them.

Confirm the fit before ordering
Send the measurements and your preferred design to BlueLine. The owner can confirm whether a listed case suits the items or whether a custom layout needs a separate quote. Do not force a vial into an opening or assume the lid will clear it because the base fits.
A case organizes its contents; its description does not establish temperature control, leak containment or a protective shipping rating. Confirm any specific requirement before ordering.
